A perfect example is the story of "The Emperor's New Clothes." The Emperor was convinced that some fabulous garment was being sewn for him when in fact there was nothing there. Lots of people were drawn into the deception, not wanting to appear stupid. Conflicting information - your mind knows something to be true, but evidence is presented to contradict that "truth."
